Growing my own veggies: Composting advice needed

| December 7, 2011 | 5 Comments

This project has given me a new motivation to grow my own vegetables. All organic.

I live in Michigan and right now, there’s snow on the ground. So I will use the winter months to sketch out my plans. I have raised planters and a couple of ten-by-ten patches of dirt I can use. I’d like to also use the off season to start composting.

Any suggestions on what kind of composter to get or where to find it?

Oh yeah. There’s my deer problem. They destroyed much of my garden this past season.

Short of fencing off the plots, which may be the only real solution, I could also use some suggestions on keeping the deer from my berries, beans and broccoli. Hey, they even ate my tomatoes this past season.

I am too lazy to turn compost and have limited space to compost. So, I use a naturemill http://naturemill.com/
compostor and when I have to much for the composter to handle, I bury it in the dirt.

A simple pile has worked great for me, but last year I wanted “containment” so I purchased one of those plastic bins that is really just 4 panels and lid. The key really isn’t in the container, and I haven’t used additives or starters. Follow the basics on what NOT to put in and you’ll have good compost in no time. My hint is to treat it as a living thing. For instance I don’t “add” to the compost pile, I “feed” it.
    Enjoy!
